NEWS

Remember Janet Fox? Good news from PW: "Kendra Levin at Viking has preempted Sirens author Janet Fox's middle-grade debut, Chatelaine: The Thirteenth Charm. It's a mystery that asks the question: would you rather spend World War II trapped in an eerie Scottish castle with a ghost or with a Nazi spy? The book is slated for winter 2016; Erin Murphy at Erin Murphy Literary Agency brokered the deal for world rights." http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-book-news/article/63603-rights-report-week-of-august-4-2014.html

EVOLUTION

The way kids read books is changing. Here is a thoughtful article from PW.

POETRY

We had our first ever Poetry Slam in April. It was tons of fun and a nice segue into summer. Here is one of the poems:

TEXAS SUMMER
by Angela Turner

Sumner is fun, or so you would think.
And in most places you would be right.
But in Texas . . .
In Texas you sweat from morning 'til night
And drink water all day if you know what's right.
Go to a party, icing melts off the cake,
Hop in a car, your legs start to bake.
With all the heat, the bluebonnets droop,
Swim in the Brazos River, it feels like soup.
Sno Cone? Yay! But it melts down your arm.
A picnic outside has lost all its charm.
When out in the sun, a hat is a must,
A fan you say?  Not with the dust.
But even in Texas there is one thing you will find
To bring some relief to your sun scorched mind.
So walk on inside, its waiting right there--
AIR CONDITIONING! Answer to a Texan's prayer.
